Foxhounds were the very first of the puppy races in Great Britain to come under the domination of scientific breeding. There'd been hounds of more ancient origin, like the Southern Hound and the Bloodhound; but something different was wanted near the end of the seventeenth century to hunt the wild deer which had become scattered after Cromwell's civil war. The demand was consequently to get a faster hound than those hitherto known, and people devoted to the chase started to strain it.

Somewhat wide, not peaked like the Bloodhound, but extended from the apex to the frontal bones, eyebrows quite prominent, dog toy lips cut blank in the eye to the nostril, ears set low and in their normal state thin and shapely, although not large, nose large, chin strong and flat, and little dewlaps, expression ferocious, and with all the most often repellent.

Very bright and intensely set, full of determination, and with a very continuous expression. The look of the Foxhound is quite remarkable.
Neck ought to be absolutely clean, nobody ruffle whatever. The length of neck is of significance, both for stooping and providing an air of majesty.

The blades should be nicely into the trunk, and ought to slant, otherwise be wide and powerful, to meet the arms, so that should be long and strong.
Feet and toenails:-
The bone needs to be perfectly straight from the arm downward, and descend in the same degree of dimensions into the ankles. The knee should be nearly flat and level; there should be no curve before coming into the feet, that ought to be very strong, round, cat-shaped, and every toe wash place as it were.

The jacket is hard hair, but short and smooth, the feel is as rigid as fingernails, however beautifully laid.
Belvoir tan, that is black and brown, totally intermixed, with white markings of different shapes and sizes. The white should be very opaque and clear. Black and white, with tan markings on head and stifles. Badger pied a kind of grey and white. Lemon pied, light yellow and white. Hare pied, a darker white and yellow.
Height: Dogs from 23-1/2 to 24 inches; bitches from 22 to 22-1/2 inches.
